Top Ten Tips To Make Your Hair Color Last

Book an appointment with a Jillian Grace color expert, and read on for our tips on how to keep the shade you left the salon with.

1. Before Coloring, Use A Clarifying Shampoo. The day before your color appointment, wash with a clarifying shampoo like Bumble + bumble’s Sunday Shampoo. This is an excellent preparatory cleanser for coloring, because it removes build-up and toxins from your hair to ensure optimal color saturation.

2. After Coloring, Wait At Least 48 Hours To Shampoo. By holding off on washing right away, you allow the color to penetrate deeper into the hair shaft. Which brings us to …

3. Use The Right Products. It doesn’t make sense to invest in professional color and then use products that don’t preserve it! Your shampoos, conditioners, and styling products should be specifically formulated for color-treated hair. We are huge fans of Bumble + bumble’s Color Minded line — they seal in color and smooth the cuticle to prevent fading, maintain color integrity, and add shine.

4. Don’t Shampoo Every Day. Even if you are using a color-protecting shampoo, resist the urge to scrub daily — that will fade your shade. Shampooing 3-4 times a week is sufficient for most hair types. If you start to get the greasies on the days in between, use a dry shampoo. (We love Bumble + bumble’s Pret-a-Powder.)

5. Condition More. Healthy, moisturized hair retains color better. Condition often, with both regular and deep conditioners.

6. No Hot Water! Hot water strips your hair of its color and moisture. Wash with lukewarm water and rinse with cool.

7. Sun & Chlorine Are The Enemy. Summer is a bummer on color: the sun will fade your tint like nothing else, and pool chlorine can seriously discolor hair (blondes everywhere have suffered from green locks). Protect hair from the sun with hats, and slather on a leave-in conditioning product with sunscreen. (Bumble + bumble’s Color-Minded UV Protective Styling Balm has UV filters, is super nourishing, and smells great.) For frequent swimmers, coat hair with conditioner before donning your swim cap — your hair will absorb the conditioner, not the chlorinated water.

8. Cut Back On Heat Styling. Yes, we love our blow dryers and our flat irons, but when used daily, they wreak havoc on hair color (and can seriously dry and damage your locks). Air-dry when possible and use a thermal protection product — Bumble + bumble’s Color-Minded UV Protective Styling Balm is not only a great sun shield, but an effective thermal protector.

9. Go Easy When Towel-Drying. Don’t rub your hair vigorously: gently squeeze the water out. This will cut down on breakage, too.

10. Get A Glaze or Gloss. What’s the difference? A gloss is clear and lasts from 2-4 weeks; a glaze adds semi-permanent tint to refresh hair color and lasts about a week or two. Both add shine and penetrate the hair shaft to create a “top coat” to protect and preserve the color.
